The Gurkhas are formed by Indo-Mongoloid people from Nepal namely Magar, Gurung, Rai and Limbu or MaGuRaLi.After the founding of modern Nepal by P.N Shah, MaGuRaLi communities were never given equal opportunities in Nepal by vedic Aryan or Tajgadhari (thread-wearing) government.Since the Tajgadhari group could not enslave MaGuRaLi communities, they send men from MaGuRaLi to join British Army as Gurkhas. In return the British governmentA279; paid the Nepal government for every Gurkha enlisted.
Service no. 1 is the knife carried on operations by all the Gurkhas(Royal Gurkha Rifles, one of the worlds elite fighting forces). It is issued to all British Gurkha Soldiers on enlistment and is retained throughout their army career.Crafted by hand in Nepal , it has 10.5" long blade and 4.5" long Buffalo horn handle. The dulled scabbard is made of Buffalo hide(outside)while best quality pine wood for inside. All Khukuris have two pockets on the back of the scabbard which hold a blunt steel called "chakmak" for sharpening the blade or for striking spark from flint and a little knife known as "karda" used for skinning small animals such as rabbits. The notch (kaura or kaudi) in the blade near the hilt of most khukuris serves as conduit for the blood on the blade to drip out, thus preventing it from soiling the hilt, as well as a device for catching and neutralizing and enemy blade.
